Global Warming in Texas

So as you can see, we have apparently moved back north. This past week was nasty (for Texas anyway). The girls and I were out of school and work until Thursday, all the major roads in town were closed, and everyone was pretty much just in a panic. On Tuesday morning, I attempted to go to work since my job did not call off work until the last minute. After I backed out (read - slid) of the driveway and landed in the street, I made it almost around the corner before the back end of the truck slid around and I ended up pointed back to the house. I read that as a sign and went back home. Of course, when I tried to get back up the little hill into our driveway, I took the ice roller coaster that landed me and the truck in the front yard. I finally got it back to the street and parked on the road. Just lovely. And, in timely fashion, 15 minutes after I got back in the house, I got the call that the base was closed. So our new truck got to spend the storm out in the road instead of in the garage. Not happy.

All day Tuesday we had power but then it went out about 7 on Tuesday night - right when American Idol was coming on. Lovely timing. We were also in the middle of cooking too. Thank goodness for the gas stove. Of course, I had to light each eye with a match but what are you gonna do. So, Tuesday night was spent cooking in candlelight while the girls played Candyland by flashlight.

Things started to thaw out by Wednesday afternoon and all was back to normal on Thursday. Oddly enough, the news kept saying that people were happy on Thursday to be able to get out of their house and go back to work after being iced in for a few days. I don't know who those people are but I think they need to be slapped. We watched lots of movies, played games, and slept a good bit on our days off. I would have been more than happy to do that again on Thursday too.

Check out the pictures below of the lovely ice. Not much compared to DC and the like, but it was the end of the world in Texas.

Icicles in Texas. I broke some off the house for Karlyle to play with in the bathtub. She thought it was the coolest thing.

Trucks don't get much traction on this stuff.

The stranded Yukon. The driveway looks like its covered with a bit of snow but under it was a good 1/4 inch sheet of ice.

Me on Wednesday morning trying to get a path to get the truck into the garage.

No watering needed today.

Our lamppost.

Close up of the lamppost - little hard to drive on that.

K was very concerned about her picnic table.

Jackson got to spend the week indoors where his water wasn't frozen.
